2 Tiger Test Ride : Honda XL700 V Transalp

Surely we can not deny We are Transaplisti tiger cubs, so the urge to try the new model has hit us since the first rumors.

Having participated in a 2007 Honda for a friend we were hoping for a test, but since there was the opportunity we have waited to rent it.

 

So the last week of March and we decided we booked the charter for the new Transalp XL700 V Saturday, 30/03/2008.

I confess that I could not wait to get up to go to try the new Honda which also had told me as blue as mine!

The first discovery of the subscription cards for rental is that it only has 100 km and therefore it is still running, I can see blur our test projects, but then I say, quietly going along and making the state highway low speed you can do the same.

Our destination is Lake Garda and the beautiful scenery and the route of dueruote published in February 2008.

We deliver the motorcycle around 9.30 am on the side and you have the first comparison between the 2 models old and new. The new one is less imposing, smaller, at first glance reminds me a little 'TDM and a bit' new Pegasus, but I do not mind the look.

The surprises, however, appear once climbed into the saddle. Because the new tank allows for better integration and the session seems lower, but in reality the difference in the technical data does not exist. Still have to look at the different impression and what do you think?

I have no preconceived notion, indeed I am pleased that the model has given me to hire the ABS (actually makes me see the good that was passing by Luke) It 'a nice surprise to have in testing the model almost at the Top.


The surprises do not end here of course. Known immediately by starting a different sound than my Transalp. My 2002 model has a sound that seems almost an electric motor, the new model has a thicker sound, reminds me a little shame that 'a pot of beans, but I am curious to try the new 700cc engine. I remember a friend of the club told me that Varadero is the revised version of the engine deauville.

I finish the bike have a look with expectation gurandando wider rear tire, give me a little 'more grip, and with smaller front tire concerns. In the side view you can see perhaps even more the difference in line between the two models. The most impressive old though more dated and the new little one, but slimmer.

One thing I have always been unconvinced by the photos of the new Transalp is to protect the engine and catalyst. In fact the comparison is seen as the new model is intended mainly for the road while leaving more space than the old expression off-road. But you will find interesting details and opinions below.

Meanwhile, park my trusty TA weight, and loaded tiger we leave for our second Tiger Test Ride (although in reality, and the third).

The new Transalp responds very well, feels that the engine hp and KW in addition, something I looked forward to the new model. I would say that the displacement is more than apt, and the increase in performance allows you to have more than I wanted, but without exaggeration. We go from 39Kw to 44kW with a couple that goes from 56 to 60Nm always under the sheets.
Personally I feel that under 3500 rpm the engine has a horrible sound, while higher levels starts to become enjoyable for both the sound for the shove.
Right from the first curve we see that the new TA is more stable has a different setting.
We decide to make a piece of highway and find that the stock windshield repair times up to 100 km or thereabouts seems to be on a naked. I think we can improve that by installing the fairing plus I have the old model, but after another 50 miles I noticed that the bike posture that leads to the motorway is not built as in normal road enduro, but slightly bent like a naked, the What puzzles me, though a bit 'more sheltered.

We stop for the first stop and ask the opinions of zavorrina. She also is puzzled you think of our less comfortable, but I find that consumption is much better or so it seems at first glance. We opt to exit the highway and go to state for the problem of running and driving pleasure.

The impression of journeys at low speeds is improved. The suspension is filtered over a little road 'under the bumps but they give the impression of greater stability. I resist the provocations of friends on two wheels whizzing close to us and calmly on the Garda arrive.

After we lost in the maze of information on the Garda arrive on the west bank and decide to go to Sirmione. A beautiful place, thanks to the beautiful day and the fact that culture is the week we visit the castle and Veronese free!
The impact of the area is such that the tigerbum I propose to return for a more extensive tour, an opinion which I fully share.

Something we nibbled a few steps to the area, but then we remember that we test we decided to go see the path indicated by dueruote. Starting from Tignale through the dirt of the Passo d'Ere you fall on statatale Gargnano. The road along the lakeshore is not exactly beautiful but it is very clearly marked.

Taking the detour to find the best qualities of Tignale new TA. In the mixed route, in fact, that goes down is a pleasure and the curves are the brush strokes and the grip and stability are virtually road. I enjoy and my weight makes me notice that bends too!

So take a break on a ballast I go back to where the tiger shows in the picture next to it. Just because there was fog and the view was not much

Announcement continue to chatter with some difficulty, but the signs are good and the magazine should take a single lane paved road, almost a forest road paved, but beautiful in its path through the woods.

As we have already addressed many dirt roads in pairs and, although not ideal, it is always nice and with a little 'of calm we were able to go almost anywhere with our old CT, so we're not worried.

Then take the dirt road and here I discover to my dismay that the new Transalp not send me the confidence that gives me the old. The front wheel seems to go a bit 'where you want, lock the front brake too early and the stiff suspension, on the streets have proven a plus, here are suffering. We pass then the first part of the dirt road and after a short descent we come to believe that they have finished and we stop for a break, we are pleased with the test but not so much the result of off-road motorcycles.

We discover that, alas, in reality, and only a break and the most difficult part of the dirt road with traits similar to scree begins here! After a while 'suffering and the meeting of a group of BMW 1200 GS seems to have problems come on top. The descent becomes too difficult in two with the new Transalp and after the scare, and have stood the bike from falling by a miracle, the dismounts zavorrina (bike is always a risk in themselves ).

We reach a point where the quieter tigerbum can reassemble the dirt road we end up blaming fatigue. Even the bike proves to be tired the temperature rises above 100 ° with the fan starting time.

We return on the tarmac, where we treat ourselves to some nice relaxing curves as we head towards the highway. Here we keep a moderate pace, but with some acceleration in overtaking. The CT performs well even if the wind protection is not great at least not to bend significantly.

On the positive side with a full and a path that can not be more mixed (including dirt roads) we did 260km. Considering therefore that the old Transalp do 240km and has 2 liters more autonomy and consumption of the new TA is not bad. Reporting system is also very nice with the notches of the reserve of gasoline flowing digital down.

I am left with little else to say, we enjoyed the trip and the test was crucial!
Personally I do not sell the new Transalp as an evolution of the old, the bike reminds me more of a naked that an enduro.
Certainly the mix is ​​much more fun the old TA, but for tourism torque is not great at least for those who make more than 200km in one day as we are, with regard to the dirt and let them feel better or if they want to do easy ones alone but I do not recommend it anyway.
The test helped me to understand that between the new and old prefer the old even if I could rent the new for a trip to the mountains.
